Making Sense of Japanese : What the Textbooks Don't Tell You
Published in Paperback by Kodansha International (July, 1998)
Author: Jay Rubin
Average review score:

Explains the seemingly unexplainable
This book by Jay Rubin humorously explains some of the most seemingly esoteric aspects of the Japanese language to the intermediate student of Japanese. Some of the most useful concepts that Rubin explains are ha and ga, giving and receiving, passive, causative, hodo, and many more. After a casual reading of this book I felt that certain aspects of the Japanese language seemed to make more sense than ever before. I would recommend this book to any third year student of Japanese.

Totally deserving of these 5 stars
When I ordered this book, I hadn't read it, or even seen the cover. I just picked it up because I'm anxious to learn more daily Japanese conversation. While this book didn't teach me the slang and modern speech I'm wanting to learn, I did find it to be extremely useful. I'm not finished yet, but this book has so far been very informative and easy to read. The writing is excellent, and it's entertaining to read. It explains how "subjectless" sentences work and how to use "wa" and "ga" properly, amomg other things of course. If you're a student of Japanese, and you want to actually understand the logic of the language instead of simply memorizing vocabulary, this book is a must-have.

Successfully disarms the scariest concepts in Japanese.
If you're an intermediate student of Japanese, but haven't yet begun to really understand the language, this book will clear up a lot of your concerns. The author takes a humorous approach to some intimidating topics, and yields new insight on other, easier topics which textbooks often leave vague. The book frequently illustrates these concepts with examples in Japanese literature and journalism. Even examples in speech are explained in-depth. Yet, it remains light-hearted and humorous, relating the mysterious translations and hidden connotations in a way that the English-speaking mind can understand. Most importantly, it debunks many of the myths and misconceptions about Japanese that make Westerners fear it so. It also seemed that the author was subtly trying to prepare the readers to think in Japanese, which as wel all know is a vital step towards fluency.

The title pretty much sums it up when it says "What the Textbooks Don't Tell You." This book ! ! essentially takes the information from your textbooks and makes sense of it. If you study independently, like me, this book should be on your list. If you don't need this book, you probably know someone who does.

Australian and South African Ford Telstar, Mazda 626
I searched everywhere for a repair manual for my Ford Telstar (Mazda626 clone). The book was particularly well suited to my purposes, as it described repair procedures in detail. As cars are more technologically advanced than before, I learnt a great deal and discovered features which I never knew existed on my car. The Fuel Injection section was particularly interesting to me. You learn exactly what not to mess with.

must have for a probe owner
This book is a must have for any 2nd generation ford probe owner. It has saved me a fortune on repair costs. well worth the price lots of pictures better than the chiltons manual.

Mazda/Probe Haynes Manual
The Haynes manualfor the Mazda/Probe vehicle is as easy to use as other Haynes manuals I have purchased for other cars I have owned. Pictures are of good quality and the instructions are somewhat detailed. I would defintely recommend a Haynes manual for any car.

Modern King James Version of the Holy Bible
Published in Hardcover by Sovereign Grace Publishers (January, 1993)
Author: Jay P. Green
Average review score:

An accurate and reliable updating of the KJV
The "Modern King James Version" (MKJV) is a lesser-known Bible version. It is an updating of the "King James Version." Jay P. Green, the translator of the "Literal Translation of the Bible" (LITV), also translated the MKJV. The press release for the MKJV says, "... it is the grand old version in the English of today-period!"

It is true that the MKJV updates the archaic language of the KJV, but the MKJV does make other changes as well. However, these changes tend towards making the text more literal than the KJV, and the MKJV is easier to read than the KJV. So as compared to the KJV, it is an improvement. But as compared to the "New King James Version," I'm not so sure.

I have been using the NKJV as my primary Bible for years. The MKJV is somewhat more accurate than the NKJV. But the difference is not that great. And the MKJV is also somewhat more difficult to read. So I see no reason to switch to it. So I will probably stick with my practice of using the NKJV as my primary Bible and Green's LITV as my secondary Bible.

But having said that, the MKJV is a very good Bible version. It is very accurate and is based on what I believe to be a very good Greek text, the "Textus Receptus." So the NMKJV is very reliable and is worth checking out.

I discuss the versions mentioned above in much more detail, along with about 30 other versions of the Bible, in my book "Differences Between Bible Versions."

A trustworthy translation.
...The Modern King James Version is what it says; an update of the King James translation that adheres to modern English, but more importantly, even more strictly to the original languages than the KJV. Specifically:

#1) Archaic language has been replaced by present usage (few currently know what "trow", "wot", etc. mean.)

#2) Some words have changed in meaning since the early 17th century. For example, "conversation" no longer means "conduct or behavior" and "let" no longer means "to hinder". Modern usage is now reflected.

#3) 1611 sentence & word formation were different than now. While "you" had recently come into use, "thee", "thou", "thy" were still common. These currently hinder modern understanding and have been replaced in the MKJV.

#4) Some KJV translations were inadequate, as recognized subsequently. Stricter translations that have been suggested over the centuries, based on the original language, are substituted. This is done on a word-for-word basis with the original and can be verified with a Hebrew/Greek lexicon dictionary. No change has been made without referring to the original Greek or Hebrew.

#5) In spots where the KJV paraphrased, the original text has been restored.

The Modern King James Version should be the version of choice for all Christians. Also recommended are the "Literal Translation" (total emphasis on literal translation at the expense of occasional grammatical complexities) and the "Interlinear Version", by the same publisher, in which the original language text is shown with word-for-word translation underneath, the literal English translation at the side, all keyed to Strong's concordance so you can follow along and see the decisions the translator made. No Christian should be without these three Bibles...

Most reliable english translation without the "thy, didst.."
Finally, a reliable english translation without the words: thy, didst, lest, etc.." Great Book for readers not used to reading literature in the old english language format. It is without too much footnotes and references to other text. It is highly recommended.

Northwestern University: Celebrating 150 Years
Published in Hardcover by Northwestern University Press (September, 2000)
Author: Jay Pridmore
Average review score:

A Yearbook For the Last 150 Years
I have this book displayed on my shelf right next to my Northwestern yearbooks because it is prepared in a simlar format. This book methodically and beautifully details the history of Northwestern University through illustrations, historic photographs, and memorable accounts that will keep you interested from start to finish. I particularly appreciated the aerial maps of the campus that appear at the beginning of each chapter. This shows the layout of the campus for the time period covered by the chapter, and truly shows the progress that has been made over the years.

My only complaint is that there were not more pictures of the building of the landfill section of campus. This, to me, is the most fascinating part of Northwestern's history and is now one of the most beautiful parts of campus. In summary, I would like to have seen a few more 'old vs new' photographs. The way it is, there are just enough to tempt the palette. So, it is only natural that, after reading this book, you will be thirsty for more. I hope a next edition will be written to answer that call.

As it is, this is a well-executed account of a terrific university. Happy birthday NU! And thank you, Mr. Pridmore, for this wonderful gift.

Amazing and with High Interest!
Having lived near Northwestern all my life, I thought I knew the history. However, 'little did I know!' This is an extremely well done book, the pictures are priceless as are the narratives. A must have for history buffs and university supporters.

Wow.
I have very fond memories of the time I myself spent at NU, and this book never ceases to bring them back to mind! This sesquicentennial tribute does it all -- from detailing the history of the school as well as of longstanding Wildcat traditions (i.e., Waa-Mu, Mee-Ow, painting The Rock) to showcasing some of the Evanston campus' most "photogenic" spots. This is definitely a must-have for any NU-loving alum.

Object Relations in Psychoanalytic Theory
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1983)
Authors: Jay R. Greenberg and Stephen A. Mitchell
Average review score:

A Classic
An astounding piece of synthetic analysis of a very, very complicated field, this book has rightly been referrred to by scores and scores of subsequent writers in the field of psychoanalysis and personality theory. The authors have critically scrutinzed the various schools of thought in the post-Freudian landscape and astutely determined their theoretical similarities and differences. The writing is direct and persuasive, albeit intended for an audience familiar with psychological terminology. It is amazing work and one of the best books in any field over the last 20 years.

I like it!
This book is necessary in developing a full understanding of Object Relations Theory.

Essential reading
This book is cited in virtually every book written on object relations theory since its publication. It gives a thorough background to the theories of all of the major contributors to object relations theory. It is brilliantly written and understandable with a basic knowledge of psychoanalytic jargon. An essential work.

Ophthalmology
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (June, 2003)
Authors: Myron Yanoff and Jay S. Duker
Average review score:

Probably the best general ophthalmic text available
This is currently the preferred general text-book in Melbourne, Australia for studying for our equivalent of the board examinations. It is comprehensive, up-to-date and lucid. There is minimal extraneous information, but sufficient detail for the purposes of most general ophthalmologists. It is liberally illustrated, and the quality of photographs is generally very high indeed. There are a few photographs of difficult to photograph conditions that are not up to the generally excellent quality.

My main complaints at present are the too common typographical errors and variations in format across chapters.

a milestone for the new millenium
Congratulations to the books'editors and contributors for having produced the new standard reference one volume textbook in Ophth.Terrific layout, generous and outstanding illustrations and tables, text from some of the worlds' best clinicians and researchers and on top of that a joy for the eye! That's how medical books will look in the new millenium. It's a pity it only came out a few months before finishing my residency.

VERY WELL WRITTEN WITH EXCELLENT ILLUSTRATIONS
This book is very well written, with some fantastic illustrations. It serves as a logical intermediate successor to previous textbooks in the field of Ophthalmology. A must read for all Ophthalmology residents, and physicians in training, The CD version is a superb reference for busy practitioners.

Playing With Fire
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (October, 1992)
Authors: Jay Carty, Jay Carthy, and Steve Halliday
Average review score:

Seeking TRUTH about Eternity? Try this book by Jay Carty
Do your eyes glaze over when important issues are discussed by theologians, even though you REALLY DO want to know the Truth. In "Playing With Fire," Jay Carty gets to the heart of the issue of our eternal destiny without transporting the reader into the seminary classroom. At the same time, he is biblically accurate and pulls no punches. He is non-offensive with this subject that can so easily offend. If the non-Christian is wanting to intellectually pursue an understanding of basic Christian motives, this book will move him or her a good way down the road; it is foundational in many ways. For Christians yearning for solid answers on Heaven and Hell, but are confused by mushy, non-answers (or total avoidance of the subject) coming from the pulpit, give this book a try. I am disappointed that the book is out of print and could only find one in the Amazon Used Book Section; it should be made available to a dying World by everyone who has a copy and is finished reading it.

Should be beside the Bible in every hotel and motel.
This is a book for Believers. This is a book for Non-believers. Almost believers, just about believers and wish I could believeres are the main targets. The ammo? Gems right from the Word. This is a book for anyone that may not feel uncomfortable finding themselves knelling beside the bed(I like to read in bed). It's a book you'll want to give to a fiend,it's a book you'll have to give. I know, I've given three copies.

Powerfull!
This book is a must read for every part-time Christian. It has biblical references and uses many great analogies. The writer uses his since of humor which adds to this informative and interesting book. I will be buying this book for many of my friends; it is a great gift for any Christian.

The Power Tactics of Jesus Christ and Other Essays
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (August, 1989)
Author: Jay Haley
Average review score:

Power Tactics Of Jesus Christ and Other Assays...
This deceivingly small book is very profound, and impacts professionals and Scholars alike, leaving the Psychoanalysis student to a precarious decision: Should I act on What I Just Read? Certainly Top Honors go to Power Tactics, since this book is a compilation of loosly associated Essays, with a distinct Psychoanalitic Focus, and depicts the life of Christ, from Charirside, and analyses "historical" data as well as Bible quotations, that when interpreted from a Psychoanalytic point of view, the author, makes interesting observations and explanations while exploring Christ's behaviour and responses, which effectively takes him, (Or Mr. Haley would have us believe)through the self-imposed role of Trial and later Immolation. Deductions are similar to those of the Bible, but the "Motivation" as I understood from the author is a Formula for Revolution. The last essay in this book, Entitled "The Art Of Being a Schizophrenic" is particularly interesting reading, and gives an insight into a Chronic, Mental Illness that can have such an impact on the family, Community, and Society at large. A difficult book made easy, thanks to the elocuence of Dr. Haley. and I believe any College student or Mental Health Professional will benefit from his insights. Have read it several times, and would like to acquire an original Harcover, if it was ever published.

Amazing connection between Theology (Christianity) and Psych
This excellent little book, is composed of several chapters, most appear to only have a superficial relationship with the topic, only to realize at the end, the possible implications of following behaviour as Christ did two millenia ago. This is interpreted by the author, pointing correlations with the esscence of Freudian Psychoanalisis, the author skillfully interpreting Christ's behaviour before crucifixion, in a Psychoanalytic interpretation, and the intentional maneuvers that gave Christ an advantage over his Roman captors. This in turn, reveals amazing insights for Contemporary Judeo-Christian philosophy, and meshes seamlessly with the topics, offering Psychoanalytic theoretical relations, and the impact such behaviour would have in current society, as described in the last Chapter: "The Art of Being Schizophrenic". Each chapter is an excellent small story that stands on its own merit. However, to appreciate this thought provoking book, it is necessary to have an open mind as well as the ability to discern nuances otherwise lost in obscure religious rhetoric.

Still fresh and sparkling
The title essay, "The Power Tactics of Jesus Christ," is the most obviously shocking work in this collection. Haley proposes one of the most original interpretations of the Bible I've seen: a psychological analysis of Jesus' actions, assuming only that he was a man trying to build a mass movement to topple a power structure. He discusses the "surrender tactic" of turning the other cheek, which is actually a subtle way of forcing one's enemy to capitulate (although he notes that although Jesus instructed his disciples on the value of this tactic, he never used it himself.) I won't spoil the other revelations; suffice to say that Haley grounds all of his conclusions on the literal text of the Bible. His writing is lucid and full of wry humor. Other essays include "The Art of Being a Schizophrenic" and "The Art of Being a Failure as a Therapist". He takes potshots at the new paradigm of drugging mentally patients until "their eyeballs float and they are unsure of what is up and what is down," and he gently mocks the pompousness of the erstwhile psychoanalytic community. During their meetings: "Attempting to outdo one another in explanations of the bizarre insides of patients, each speaker is constantly interrupted by shouts from the back of the hall such as, 'Not at all! You're confusing an id impulse with a weak ego boundary!' or 'Heaven help your patients if you call THAT cathexis!' Even the most alert analyst soon develops an oceanic feeling as he gets lost in flurries of energy theories, libidinal drives, instinctual forces, and super ego barriers." Haley has an incisive mind, is not afraid to poke fun at himself, and this book reveals him as one of those "kindly, benign humanists" of analysts that he admires so much.

The Psychic
Published in Paperback by Minerva Press (04 May, 2000)
Author: Jay Sweeney
Average review score:

Great book!!!
This book captures your imagination and opens your mind into the infinite possibilities of life and adventures with psychic powers. I was unable to put this book down and feel extremely fortunate I came upon this hidden novel. I am looking forward to the author's next book.

Great Read
This book was an exceptional look into the haunting possiblities of the future spiced with sci-fi adventure that made this a great book. You are drawn into the characters and wish that you could share in Eddies powers in your own life. The possibilities of psychic power are opened up to you and you share in the voyeurism that it allows. I highly recommend this book to all.

How much is too much information and intelligence?
Jay Sweeny, a young upstart author, sets this fast-paced sci-fi, romantic thriller on the West Coast of the US at the dawn of the introduction of the next and critical step in information technology--artificial intelligence. Eddie, the main character of the book is bombarded with unfortunate events that leave him with fresh powers that allow him to advance from a the greasy floor of a Fresno garage to the apex of the entire tech industry. He is almost driven insane in the process. Sweeney lets the reader in and out of Eddie's troubled brow as if he were psychic himself--omniscient. The antagonist, Victo Paine is sinister to the bone and as dark as any villian could hope to be. Sharing Eddie's gift, his revelations come as a colossal surprise to the unexpecting reader and his genius and cruelty have rarely been matched in literature. Verne, the mainframe with A.I. practically evolves into a human character in the story as he surprises even Winston, his creator, with a sense of judgement and morality--before unheard of in a machine. Sweeney poses huge questions regarding the future of the human race and our origins as well. At the same time he delivers a damn good story. Get ready to peer into the thoughts of peers and strangers alike--you may not like what you find. You may not be alone out there.
